The Recruitment Process:
Registration
The first step in the recruitment process is Registration.
To register you will do the following:
- Fill out the on-line registration form here. Online registration requires login with your Texas
State NetID and password. If you are enrolled at Texas State, but do not have a Texas State NetID, you can create one here.
IFC Recruitment Fees
As mentioned above you will pay $35 for recruitment. This
fee is non-refundable and is used by the IFC to cover the
cost of the recruitment process.
To be considered formally registered
you must also attend the first two days, Orientation and Round
I of Formal IFC Recruitment set for Sunday, September 9th
from 6-7pm (Orientation) and Round I is from 7-10pm in the
LBJ Student Center. If you complete these two rounds of recruitment
you will not have to pay a bid acceptance fee should you receive
a bid at the end of recruitment.
IF you do not attend these two events but registered at
some point and receive a bid at the end of recruitment you
will pay a $50 bid acceptance fee to the IFC.
IF you do not register for recruitment but receive and
accept a bid at the end of IFC recruitment then you will be
charged a $60 bid acceptance fee and the chapter you join
will be fined an additional $50.
It is in your best interest to attend the
entire week of recruitment to ensure you are making a clear
and educated decision concerning your membership in a fraternity.
Summer Recruitment
Once the IFC receives your completed form and check or money
order it will make a copy of your registration and distribute
it to the member chapters for their review. It is possible
that you might be contacted by a fraternity during the summer.
Our rules allow for you to spend as much time with any and
all fraternities during the summer as you wish. At no time
prior to recruitment can a fraternity offer a bid nor can
you accept one. With that said, you may find it beneficial
to spend time with any of the fraternities over the course
of the summer in an effort to get a better sense as to who
they are, what they are about and how you feel with them.
The Recruitment Schedule

STEPS |
At each of the first three rounds (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) you will be given a scantron sheet by the IFC and asked to preference your top choices to attend the next day. At the same time the fraternities will submit a list of men they will invite back for the next day. Both sets of information are entered into the computer and a schedule is produced for the next day. You must pick up your schedule at the IFC office on the 4th floor of the LBJ Student Center, room 4-7.1 before going to the fraternity events each of these first three days.
Accepting a Bid
On Friday, September 14 from noon - 3pm you can go by the
LBJ Student Center to see if you have been extended an invitation
of membership by a fraternity. This is also called a "bid".
It is possible that you will receive several bids or zero
bids. If you receive a bid you will choose which to accept
and sign the bid register sheet with the IFC Executive Council
overseeing the process in the room.
Questions to Consider
- What are the academic requirements for joining a fraternity as well as getting initiated and becoming an active member?
- What are the dues for the fraternity my first semester and semesters to follow?
- What is the exact time commitment per week for fraternity activities and when will initiation occur?
- What does the chapter do to promote and assist with academic excellence?
- What does the chapter do to provide service to the community?
- Is it possible to maintain a job while joining a fraternity?
- If the chapter has a house is it mandatory to live-in at some point of membership?
- How will joining a particular fraternity benefit my future?
Advice
- Register for recruitment as early as possible to get
the financial benefit as well as earlier contact with the
fraternities.
- Be selective and meet with every fraternity several times
to ensure they are right for you.
- Understand that time management is essential to your
academic success and must be your first priority.
- Consider what you will gain from each organization you
meet with as well as what you can contribute.
- Ask questions! Get all the information you are seeking
so you can make an informed decision.
- Be yourself. Fraternities want to find good, values base
men that will contribute to the diversity of their chapters.
- Involve your parents or guardians in your recruitment
process. Talk about what you are seeing and hearing and
allow them to assist you in thinking through the process.
