Science Extravaganza™: This nationally recognized program was initially created and developed by our chapter and has expanded to other student and professional chapters across the nation. The Science Extravaganza brings together local schools, industries and the Texas State community in a fun, collaborative learning environment. The hands on science and engineering presentations demonstrate basic principles that all aspiring scientists and engineers encounter during their education.

8th Grade Leadership Seminar: MAES has been instrumental in organizing leadership activities with the local San Marcos community. Increasingly, future engineers & scientists will need to extend their learning to collaborative environments in order to remain competitive and employable. Team activities, organizational workshops, and instruction at the seminar emphases these and other necessary skills. Photos.

MAES Pre-College Program

MAES Pre-College Outreach Program

The MAES Pre-College Program is a student-oriented activity sponsored by the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists. MAES Pre-College is a nationwide program implemented by student chapters on various university sites throughout the United States.

In conducting activities of the MAES Pre-College Program, MAES student members work directly with Mexican American and Hispanic youths in high schools and junior high schools to promote the program's objective, which is:

  • To serve as role models and mentors
  • To instill an interest in engineering and science in the students contacted
  • To continually remind students of the privileges of a higher education
  • To increase the number of Mexican American and other Hispanic youth preparing for engineering and science related fields.

Past, Present, Future...

In 1978 MAES, seeing the need for role models in the Mexican American Community, began working with various school districts around the country. The goal was to give Hispanic students an introduction to the fields of engineering and science. MAES members at the university level implement the program and are the program's main source of support.

The MAES Pre-College Program has acquired a broad-based consistency throughout the country, but each university campus' activities are unique and are supported by local MAES professional chapters. Over the years hundreds of engineering and science students have been given their initial impetus by these various MAES Pre-College Programs.

MAES Pre-College Activities

Junior High School

MAES chapters work directly with junior high school youth, exposing them to technical career opportunities and preparing them to study in the field. These activities are accomplished by:

  • Promoting college education as a realistic and achievable goal.
  • Interesting parents in the engineering and science fields as a career for their children
  • Sharing information with students and creating a feeling of excitement about education.

High School

MAES chapters work directly with high school youths, advising them of the requirements and expectations of college life as an engineer or science student. These activities are accomplished by:

  • Examining financial aid sources to attend a university.
  • Discuss university services and explore options of what university to attend.
  • Offer tutoring to help students' basic preparation in all subjects.
  • Offer field trips to universities and other centers of relevant science and technology.
