~ISA History~
In 1998, Agenes Francis, current alumni of Southwest Texas State University
(SWT), first founded a student body called International Student Association.
Since then, the ISA has strived to make international student bodies present
on SWT campus. After successful establishment of the ISA, Lena, the succeeding
president, and fellow executive members made their effort to expand its membership
and its presence on campus. The ISA, in fact, hosted the first International
Festival in 1999, representing vast array of cultures on campus, and ISA surely
tightened the bond among international students and promoted its presence
to larger number of students.
From the year of 2000 to 2001, new officers resumed ISA's tradition and ideas under the leadership of new elected president, Ernest Barrera. Through various activies and events, the ISA expanded its membership and became one of the fastest growing and biggest student organizations on SWT campus. Remarkably, the ISA held the second International Festival in March 2001, hosting more than 100 guests, and provided numerous opprotunities to experience many different cultures.
From the year of 2001 to 2002, the ISA keeps membership of about 200 students and the new elected board members have succeeded its tradition and been striving to carry out its objectives and realize its ideals under the leadership of new president, Eleonore Ntibavindusha. In April 2002, the ISA held the third International Festival and more than 120 people enjoyed guest speaker, multicultural dinner, fashion shows, international booths, and live music.
From the year of 2002 to 2003, Masakazu Komiyama, have been making further
efforts to reorganize the membership and raise multicultural awareness on
campus. Membership has grown to almost 250.
Current President Nawal El Harim from Morocco, is now trying to raise multicultural
awareness on campus through uniting other international organization such
as African Student Organization, Association for Mexican American Student,
Asian Student Association, French Club, Germany Club, Japanese Club, Indian
Student Association, and so on. First of all, she decided to hold International
Dinner with all other organization. It was first time in our history to hold
international event with other international organization. This will be the
first step for all international students to be united together in this campus.
