Why Train?

For most of us, the desire to remain physically active is both automatic and self-renewing because we enjoy playing sports.  However, all recreational and professional athletes know the steep cost of achievement in sport.

Athletes train in many ways.  Some chose traditional methods of training, pointing to legendary achievements made by athletes throughout history using the same ol' "tried and true" methods.  Others choose a more progressive and contemporary approach, touting the results of athletes who "worked smarter, not harder."

As many exercise scientists and coaches will testify, new advancements in sports allow both athletes and trainers a clearer picture of performance as well as what training factors may play a role in performance.  Employing this information is what allows athletes to perform at increasingly higher levels.

Understanding both of the training philosophies outlined here is important for ESS Students.  In reality, one does not exist without the other.  New methods of training are derived from older ones and reflect a linear progression, rather than a break from tradition.

Training is a process, not a destination.  Recognizing this important truth is the first step in progressing as both an athlete and a physical educator.

In summary, athletes and coaches should employ the philosophy of doing what works, but use newly developed techniques to do it smarter.

As a Health, Physical Education or Recreation Professional, you will be responsible for instilling a desire in others to live a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

A large part of achieving this objective requires that you, the professional, be knowledgeable of the history and current state of your field.

Understanding how to use new tools made available through technological advances gives you the ability to better inform and train the people that you serve.

With this in mind, the ESS Club will be featuring different and popular training programs in an effort to better inform the ESS major at Texas State University.

Our first series of programs will center around Nike SPARQ Training and Nike Running.  Follow the link below to find out more about both of these training programs.
