HISTORY OF THE PRICE LECTURE SERIES
Established in 1984 as
part of an endowment by the late San Marcos businessman H. Y. Price, the goal
of the lecture series is twofold: to examine the life of faith as it responds
to issues of intellectual, political, economic, and cultural importance and to
make these issues accessible to faculty, students, and the community at large.
Previous Price lecturers represent diverse disciplines and many points of
view. They include Rev. George Ricker, the Rev. Andrew Young, Dr. James Fowler,
Dr. Betty Sue Flowers, Dr. Andrew Dearman, Rabbi Harold Kushner, Bishop John
Shelby Spong, and Dr. Richard Swinburne. What all these individuals have in
common is that they are persons whose life and work reflect the highest
humanitarian ideals, either through their commitment to scholarly issues of
theological or philosophical significance or to public service (or both). These
are the qualities the Price Lecture committee seeks in potential lecturers.
Special attention will be paid to nominees who have the ability to attract a
wide audience-that is, not only Texas State faculty, staff, and students, but
also members of the local community.
H. Y. Price, Jr.
H. Y. Price, Jr. lived a
life dedicated to a strong belief in campus ministry and its positive effects
on students. As an undergraduate at Texas Tech, he was actively involved in the
Epworth League. On the Texas State campus, Mr. Price was a charter member of
the Campus Christian Community (CCC).
During his years of service (1956-93), Mr. Price has been President of the Board of Delegates of the CCC, Liaison to the Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church, benefactor to both program and building funds, and supervisor and planner during the construction of both new buildings of the CCC.
In his professional career Mr. Price distinguished himself as a pioneer in the telephone industry.
In 1984 this annual lectureship was established in honor of Mr. Price. The purpose of the Price Lectureship is to provide high quality speakers who address the concerns of the university community and area churches.
The Price Lectureship Committee, the CCC Board of Delegates, and the Students associated with the Campus Christian Community are pleased to present this series of programs in memory of our late friend and benefactor.
