Nu Gamma poses with Xi Delta their
Big Brother Chapter
ALPHA PHI OMEGA NU
GAMMA
The Nu Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega
was originally founded with 32 Brothers on what was then Southwest
Texas State College, May 15th 1960, making it the first National
Fraternity permitted on campus.
Over the next 16 years Alpha Phi Omega was an important part
of the University and the city of San Marcos. Providing service
and establishing charity programs that benefited countless people,
the foremost event being a city wide blood drive that was planned
and directed by the Brothers of the Nu Gamma Chapter.
In the late 1970's the chapter chose
to relenquish their charter after Alpha Phi Omega was officially
made co-ed. The Nu Gamma chapter would not stay gone long. In
the early 1980's a new group of students chose to recharter
the chapter on Southwest Texas University Campus. This however,
would not last. In 1986, the chapters recharter was revoked
by the National Office due to lack of funding and financial
responsibility.
The newest charter of Nu Gamma is largely
the result of efforts by Ms. Samantha Bellows. After a visit
to Texas A&M University, Ms. Bellows returned to Texas State
University with a mission. On the 13th of April 2004, Ms. Samantha
Bellows placed a petition with the National Fraternity to reestablish
the Nu Gamma Chapter on Texas State University-San Marcos. Over
the next two years the Petitioning Group, under the leadership
of Petitioning President Bellows, toiled to reestablish the
Charter and seek National standing.
On the 12th of November 2005, the Nu
Gamma Chapter was officially re-chartered on our
campus with 26 Brothers. The Nu Gamma Chapter was joined by our
Big Brother Chapter, Xi Delta Texas A&M University, for
the official ceremony. The dedicated brothers of this chapter
have picked up where our other brothers left off, providing
service to many community and campus organizations in the San
Marcos area.
